How do you create a standout opening line?

Most cover letters start with “I am applying for……. or “I’m writing to be considered for…….” or even sometimes something bolder like “Please employ me now…” and although these opening statements may be appropriate, they do not set you apart from other cover letters or necessarily engage the reader to want to carry on.

I advise starting with something that immediately connects you to the company. Something that tells the company that this is not a generic cover letter. Even if the second paragraph doesn’t change the first should be where you can show the employer that you took the time and effort to write it with them in mind.

It can be a childhood memory tying you back to the company or a story about a time you fell in love with the company product. It can be an anecdote from another job or experience showing what a hard worker and determined person you are. Whatever you decide make it memorable!

Things to consider when crafting your opening line and paragraph

  • Could it show your passion?

  • Could it show your love of the company?

  • Could it highlight a personal attribute or accomplishment?

  • Could it be humorous and creative?
