6 things a recruiter looks for in a CV

Read on to find out what recruiters look for on a CV.

1.    Manageable length

Hiring managers have limited time to consider applications, so a standard UK CV should be a maximum of two A4 pages. (Recent graduates or those new onto job market may be less and some medical, project based or academic CV’s may be longer). Some recruiters state that CV length has been a factor in declining a candidate. The more there is to read, the less likely it is that all your skills and qualities will be noticed.

2.    Clear and visible ‘through the gate’ requirements

It’s important that the CV shows that you have understood the job description and specification and clearly tailored the CV to highlight how you meet them. This may be through direct experience (work or voluntary), qualifications, technical competence or soft skills.

3.    Showing a bit more

A great CV will also show your personality, ambitions and motivations. Some applicants will have great career records, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are right fit for an organisation or company culture.

4.    Be ‘skimmable’

When CVs are used to decide who to interview the ‘through the gate’ requirements specified for the role must be easy to spot. Recruiters can’t spend hours meticulously going through all CVs. If it’s poorly structured this could make the recruiter lose interest quickly.

5.    Themes of skills.

It’s not all about where someone has worked or the title of the role they held. Instead, recruiters actively look for the responsibilities they had and what was accomplished.

6.    People that enjoy what they do.

Does the CV convey any positive emotion/enthusiasm? Does the person sound like they would be compatible with company culture and a good person to work with?
