Why bother with a cover letter?

Traditionally the cover letter was the cover page for your CV (hence the name). Its purpose was to convince the reader to look at your CV. It acts as a personal introduction and helps to further sell your application. Sometimes hirers may read the CV first and then if all requirements are met they go to the cover letter to further persuade them to move you to the interview stage. The cover letter can also matter for candidates that are on the border of being moved forward.

Why bother with a cover letter?

  • Some employers and recruiters see the cover letter as just as important as your CV;

  • A cover letter gives you the chance to explain to an employer why you're the best candidate for the job;

  • It is often the first thing an employer will see so it’s a chance to make a lasting impression and show enthusiasm and keenness for the job;

  • Its an opportunity to display a bit more about yourself and your personality;

  • If you are sending a CV electronically the cover letter (in the body of the e mail rather than an attachment) will tempt the reader to open your CV attachment;

  • A good cover letter can serve as an example of your excellent communication skills.
